The Coles in the Country | A Building Update

The Coles in the Country | A Building Update

Sometime last summer I started a series of house posts that walked through some of my ideas for our new home, but then after a handful of weeks I abandoned it. Honestly, I stopped writing about it because there was absolutely zero progress. Our “home” was still a big plot of grass. We had an incredibly rainy 2018 and with our land being really raw and undeveloped, we had a hard time getting started. For MONTHS everything looked like a giant mud pit and most equipment couldn’t even get back to the spot we were hoping to build. From the time we moved into our rental house in May (that’s now my sister and her husband’s house!) to the month we had to move OUT of our rental house (October), there was very little progress. At the first of October we finally had a foundation and since then things have been going fairly smoothly! We moved in with my parents at the end of October and we’ll be here until our house is complete, sometime in March probably. All of the exciting things are starting to happen! Our drywall is up and it’s really starting to look like a house. The cabinet company will come out and measure soon so then we’ll be able to officially decide on all our cabinets and countertops (I know what I want, but staying in budget is a different task! Ha!). We’ll meet with the guy who will stain our floors soon to talk about that process as well so things really will pick up soon and it makes me so excited to see some light at the end of a very long tunnel!

Once we’ve nailed down a few details I’ll give another update and a “house tour” so you can visualize our space with me! Our floor plan is unique and will fit the needs of our family so well. Several people via my reader survey and on instagram have asked why we would build again since we built back in 2015. That’s a great question! Ha! This land was a great price for 2 acres, we had equity in our current home, AND two of our very best friends will be our neighbors. We each have two acres next to one another so we will get to “live life together” in all new ways! It’ll be so sweet for our kids to grow up close to one another and I am looking forward to all the sweet memories we’ll make together.

Here’s a view of our living room, dining space, and kitchen! Also known as… one giant rectangle!

This is the view of our living, dining, and kitchen area from the view of our back doors that lead to the porch. The two doors you see lead to our front porch, so yes, we have two “front doors”! Those big pipes you see will be where our island is and the first door on the left as well as the first door on the right are both pantry closets. The second door on the left and the second door on the right both lead down hallways. The hallway on the left leads to both of the kids rooms and their bathrooms. The hallway on the right leads to our future baby’s room, half bath, and laundry closet, as well as the door that leads to our carport.

This is the view from the back wall of the kitchen! The first door that you see to the left leads into our master bedroom and the second little cut out you see next to it will be my built in desk with doors. There wasn’t room for me to have a full office, so this space will be perfect for my computer! You see the fireplace to the right and then at the end of that wall (you can’t see it from this view) is the door to our playroom that could one day be another bedroom if we need it. Right now it’ll be perfect for the kids to be able to play right off our living room!
